Pizzica is a popular Italian folk dance, originally from the Salento peninsula in Apulia and later spreading. This turns out to be a real, live musical catharsis, and the origin of the tradition that the region of Apulia celebrates every summer: the pizzica tarantata. Tinged with voodoo, pizzica folk music has added rhythm to one of Italy's cultural hotspots.
The cultural and musical heritage of this ritual remained and today Pizzica is a music and a dance that is played during family reunions and village festivals. The "pizzica tarantata" is the music that marked the ancient healing ritual against Pizzicarella dance - The Pizzica do' Core (pinch from the heart) or courtship. This veritable “musical exorcism” is the origin of a tradition that Puglia celebrates every summer – the pizzica, a folk dance in the tarantella.
